Norrøna

In The Deep

Norrøna backcountry film. Athletes dropped into unmarked lines with helmet cams, follow rigs, and a drone that lost signal twice. We built the entire sound world from field recordings — no score, no voiceover, just snow, wind, and the silence between turns. Grade stayed cold and honest. The mountain does not need a LUT.

The footage came from two athletes across two weeks in the Alps. No film crew. GoPros, a chest mount, a follow-cam operator on skis, and a drone pilot who knew when to stay high. The brief was one sentence from the brand team: "Make it feel like the first run of the season." Everything else was already in the snow.

[ Deep ],
Adjective
  1. 01. Extending far below the surface.

  2. 02. Also the snow depth at which your mic stops being useful.

This was a sound design project that happened to have visuals. The footage was raw. Helmet POV, follow-cam shake, drone aerials that clip when the wind catches. We stabilized where it helped and left it rough where it felt real. The POV drop-in on the couloir stays shaky on purpose. You are supposed to feel your stomach move. Grade stayed cold. Blue-white snow, grey sky, dark rock. We did not warm it. We did not add contrast to make it pop. Backcountry does not pop. It sits flat and enormous and quiet until someone moves through it. The only warmth in the film comes from the jackets and the skin on gloved hands gripping poles. That is enough.
